SURE You CAN Make Your Own Wrestling Costumes!
Although wrestling has been around for many years now, its popularity hasn’t ceased and whether you’re a professional or just want to dress up for the Halloween, making your own wrestling costumes is a skill you will need. And that is if you don’t want to spend a lot of money just to purchase one. Another advantage of making your own wrestling costumes is that you can always add your personal touch and uniqueness.
1.) The first thing that you have to do is to decide on your guise. What sort of character you want to portray? Is your wrestling costume gloomy and scary or fun and colorful? Don’t start your sewing project unless you are able to come up with a final sketch of your character. I wouldn’t copy designs if I were you. Take a look at various pictures and get your inspiration from there. I’m sure you’ll let those creative juices flowing in no time. The design of your wrestling costumes should speak about your personal touch and individuality.
2.) Now that you have the final design on sketch, you can head to your local fabric store to purchase your spandex or lycra. Of course you need stretchy and breathable type of fabrics for your costume. A stretchy costume will allow you to move around easily. You also need to acquire a pattern should you decide to make your costume from scratch. If you don’t have the time to do this, you can just go ahead and buy pre-made spandex bike shorts and tank tops. You can always jazz it up by adding some interesting accessories and other decorative items.
3.) If you’re starting from scratch, you have to follow the pattern cut to your size. I see a lot of wrestlers who wear calf-length or slightly shorter pants. Some choose to wear tank style tops. If you want something unique, you can perhaps go for longer pants or long sleeves on your shirt. Stitch up any edges with double-stitching so it’s harder to rip.
Make sure all seams are sewn well and properly. The only thing you don’t want to happen in the ring is for your costume to rip. That’s way too embarrassing! Once you’re done with your top and pants, start adding some accessories.
4.) It will be cool if you can come up with a wrestler name, use some fabric paint to write the name across your top. You can also write it along one leg of your pants. If your wrestling costumes are colorful, you can still add some decorative touches like glitters. This is only advisable for a Halloween costume.
To complete the look, you can make your own mask or use face paint. Think Randy Savage. Yup I’m one of his biggest fans and I love his colorful outfit! If you want it dark and scary, think skulls and black cross. Some wrestlers even make use of capes, hats, boots, head scarves and masks as their wrestling costumes. The mask is usually used to hide one’s identity. Whatever you choose, be creative and have fun!
